The founders of Yandex began developing search technology in 1989 and launched the website yandex.ru in 1997. The main Russian subsidiary, LLC Yandex, was established in 2000. In 2007, a corporate restructuring took place, resulting in Yandex NV becoming the parent company of the entire group.

Yandex NV was previously the holding company of the IT group Yandex, which has commercial offices around the world. Registered in the Netherlands, Yandex NV primarily served an audience in Russia and the CIS.

Yandex is the largest technology company in Russia and the largest search engine on the Internet in the Russian language, holding the largest market share among search engines in the CIS and ranking as the fifth largest search engine in the world after Google, Baidu, Bing, and Yahoo!

On May 24, 2011, Yandex NV raised $1.3 billion in an IPO on the NASDAQ stock exchange. The preliminary starting price of Yandex shares of $20-22 per share was raised to $25 per share due to increased demand. The main stock exchanges where Yandex NV shares are listed are the Moscow Exchange and NASDAQ.

The executive office of the main operating subsidiary is located in Moscow, Russian Federation.

In 2024, the company underwent redomiciliation and is now named MKPAO Yandex. The foreign business has completely separated from its Russian counterpart, and the new company is named Nebius.
