AFP Proteccion S.A., a division of the Colombian holding company Grupo de Inversiones Suramericana, is the second largest pension fund manager in the country with 1.6 million clients. AFP Protección was founded in 1991 and is based in Medellin. AFP Protección S.A. manages three unemployment insurance funds, voluntary pension savings and mandatory pension savings. In 2011, the company acquired the assets of the pension fund of the Colombian bank Bancolombia in El Salvador. Later, in 2013, the firm completed a merger with the local division of the Dutch ING group, ING Administradora de Fondos de Pensiones y Cesantía S.A.
